BE PREPARED TO COVID-19

Many of you are asking for more information regarding HOW TO DEAL WITH COVID-19 to prevent contagion.

First of all, we must follow the wise imperatives:

DON'T PANIC

BE DISCIPLINED

BE PREPARED

Paranoia will not help you, and it is not at all justified. Follow the Civil Protection and the Authorities instructions.

Like every other emergency, it is vital to be confident and to have the right information to be prepared at best for the situation.

We decided, so, to share with you our knowledge of the best measures to take in this situation. These are mostly reasonable procedures that can be useful not only for a sanitary emergency like the one that is happening. These are also as a routine protocol to be followed to be serenely ready "in case of something happening," and to avoid as much as we can even other not-nice health issues – in general. They are ordinarily wise to prevent unpleasant experiences: like ordinary flu, cold, digestive problems, and so on. Something quite usual, indeed.

There are, then, few important points to work on:

  1. personal hygiene;
  2. home and workplace hygiene;
  3. sanitary prevention;
  4. protection procedures and equipment;
  5. supplies.

Ready? Here we go.

1 – PERSONAL HYGIENE:

The environment and the people we come in contact with every day are not always "clean." Even our tools (smartphone, computer, keys, books, pens, glasses, clothes, and accessories, etc.) can typically be a receptacle of bacteria and viruses because we have them around regularly, and we don't disinfect them every hour/day.
Even without reaching extremes of sterilization, it is possible and wise to follow some essential procedures in our everyday life. When we use here "contamination," we don't mean just usual "dirty stuff." We mean proved contamination by bacterias and viruses (contact with sick people or environment).

a) Wash your hands thoroughly and frequently. Especially when you touch surfaces or objects in public places. The correct procedure for hand washing is rubbing them with soap and warm water for at least 20", everywhere, including between the fingers and the tips (there are many tutorials on the web). Clean under the nails with a brush. The use of antiseptic soap is not advisable regularly: it affects the skin and weakens it (see our protective oil recipe). Use it only if you get in contact with sick people or contamination.

b) Cell phones, computers, other objects that we usually utilize during the day are not "clean." Wipe them regularly during the day with peroxide or alcohol. Always consider washing your hands after you use them, before eating, or touching your face.

c) Avoid touching your face (mouth, nose, eyes) if you don't have washed your hands.

d) If you sneeze or cough, do it in your elbow, not in your hand. It is good to take care of our own health, but we have also to protect others.

e) Take care to teach these procedures to your children. Take care that they follow them.

2 – HOME AND WORKPLACE HYGIENE

Cleanliness must be a must, regularly, for our places. In particular when viruses are around (even during a typical flu season). Here some procedures. Enhance them if you are in contact with sick people (not necessarily with an extreme virus!). At the same time: you cannot "sterilize" your environment. If you access public spaces outside, and normal life will not allow you to continuously clean knobs, surfaces, objects ... Be reasonable. Keep your hands clean. Establish a logic procedure according to your situation to avoid carrying contaminated clothes, shoes, equipment in your house.

a) Keep surfaces and door handles, knobs, tools as much clean as possible and regularly.

b) Keep your electronic devices as clean as possible and regularly.

c) In public places, clean – if you need to, if you can – objects and surfaces you have to touch. If it is not possible, wash your hands right after.

d) It is an excellent procedure not to use outdoor shoes inside your house. Have inside shoes or slippers.

e) If you work or you have to stay in public places, try to change your clothes, before staying home. Establish a procedure to undress, clean yourself, wash the clothes in a correct, safe sequence. Always avoid touching your bedding with clothes that have been outside. It is wise to have your bedroom as the cleanest place of your home.

f)Keep your kitchen and bathroom very clean.

g) Establish a space and a procedure to clean all the supplies boxes or objects that you take inside your house. This is a good idea also in normal times: we usually don't think how much dirt we can find on the packaging of our food. Don't put dirty boxes inside your fridge or your food storage.

h) You can use an ozone generator (see our advice) or UV lamps to sanitize objects and inner spaces. Follow the instructions of these devices carefully!

i) Take care to teach these procedures to your children. Take care that they follow them.

3 – SANITARY PREVENTION

There has been a rush to have facial masks and sanitizers. For this reason, it is now tricky/expensive to buy them. Almost impossible. Don't worry. If you can find them anyway, good, but don't fall into commercial traps. There is more we can do to prevent this contagion and in general seasonal diseases.

a) Keep a positive attitude! Don't worry; keep your mood high. You and your beloved will be well. Apply your procedures with serenity. Don't stuck to social medias and news all the day long, especially in lockdown. There is a lot of fake news and propaganda on the net, during this emergency. Be wise and apply discernment. Don't spread alarms or sterile criticism dictated by mere emotions.

b) Boost your immune system. That is the first prevention. Eat healthy food, move, if you have an outer protected space, stay outside (in a natural space, possibly, or close to trees). But don't infringe the provisions of the Authorities. Get interested in things you like and keep your objectives in mind.

c) Boost your immune system. Ask your medical practitioner, or your pharmacist for specific supplements or medicaments. Don't take antibiotics if your doctor didn't prescribe them! Don't take ibuprofene: it seems that it can induce vulnerabilities and complications in case of COVID-19.

d) Take care to apply these procedures to your children. Take care they are protected.

4 – PROTECTION PROCEDURES AND EQUIPMENT

We already said that there had been a rush to get masks and sanitizers. Even toilet-paper! (WHY?). Try to find them because it is wise to have them in your regular supplies – anyway, independently from this specific emergency. It has been a good reminder, though: GET PREPARED FOR EMERGENCIES BEFORE THEY HAPPEN!

DO NOT HOARD SHOPS! This would be never done, in any emergency. It is also dangerous. Plus, specifically in this case, it is substantially senseless to be fully equipped to save yourself, while all the rest of the community around you get contaminated or has supplies problems!

a) Have with you sanitizing gel and/or wipes and use them, if you had the opportunity to buy them. That doesn't substitute hand washing, though. Hand washing doesn't ruin hands' skin as much as sanitizers.

b) Have disinfectant products for the home and use it.

c) You should have bought these kinds of masks at home BEFORE THE EMERGENCY: N95 (FFP3) or N100 mask (check they REALLY are that: they are selling many fakes). Have surgical masks in alternative. Be careful to check that there are no gaps at the sides, and the adherence to your face is guaranteed. The use of the mask is useful when a sick person wears it to avoid spreading the disease. It is less critical that healthy persons wear them unless they are in a vulnerable category. Consider to have them, but you don't have to wear them, necessarily. You should wear them IF you get in contact with proven contagious people or environments, or if you have to be in a risky environment. Don't hoard masks in shops: there are needing people around you. Healthcare operators and rescuers need them way more than us!

d) Take care to have these items for your children. Take care they are protected.

5 – SUPPLIES

We do repeat: DO NOT HOARD SHOPS! This would be never done, in any emergency. It is also dangerous. Plus, specifically in this case, it is substantially senseless to be fully equipped to save yourself, while all the rest of the community around you get contaminated or has supplies problems!

You must prepare your home supplies on time. Don't rush to hoard supermarkets and shops now! It is complicated to re-supply when some REAL EMERGENCY happened, and as see now. In these situations, a lot of people rush into the stores, and that is NOT a pleasant situation you want to find yourself. It is also dangerous. So, it is wise to have home supplies for at least one month (this is a bit of good advice even for regular times, as we see). The quantities we write here are the MINIMUM amount suggested. Again: naturally, you have to prepare these supplies BEFORE and have them at home normally. In the present situation, try to keep supplies at a good level for three oe seven days. Always think that people more vulnerable and more in need than you could need what you get in excess. Now it is time for diffused solidarity.

a) EQUIPMENT: see 4 - PROTECTION PROCEDURES AND EQUIPMENT

b) WATER: estimate not less than 2 liters (or 1/2 gallon) per day per person of drinking water. That means: 60 liters/person/month (15 gallons/person/month). They don't take such a great space as you could imagine (unless you are 12 in the family). It is also possible to have a reserve of clean water for washing food, kitchenware, and yourself. It is possible to reduce the amount of water needed daily for these purposes to at least 15 to 20 liters/person/day (4 to 5 gallons/person/day), that means 450 to 600 liters/person/month (120 to 150 gallons/person/month). Yes, that takes space and it is not said that you can find it, presently. Anyway, the pubblic water supply is working good.

c) FOOD: MRE or similar Emergency Food is perfect. But expensive and you cannot go on for long periods with them If you have them, good. It is good to build a stock of canned meat, canned fish, rice, pasta, beans of different types, lentils, oil, salt, honey, dried fruits, dried chestnuts, peanuts, walnuts, seeds (chia, sunflower, pumpkin), dried soups, canned soups, and in general every long-lasting food that you like. You can stock apples, sweet potatoes, potatoes. Onions (they can be useful also for cleaning other food when added to it, or wounds, or even rooms' air), garlic and dried chilly peppers are a must to have, and they last: they clean your digestive system. Add tea (green and black) and herbal teas. Add chocolate, coffee: why not enjoying some good moment? Have one Rum, Brandy, or similar alcohol stuff: not to drink, but to be used to "clean" water or some food, if needed. Have some N5 high energy food (they are high carbs tablets) in your stock, for critical moments. That is not "food" that can substitute the rest, but they can integrate in case of physical decay. Be careful to rotate your stock MONTHLY if you don't need to access it in an emergency.

d) Other supplies: be sure you have gas to cook. Have in your supplies soap, toothpaste, and toothbrushes, shampoo, bath-soap, clothes detergents, surface cleaners, and disinfectants. Hydrogen Peroxide is good to have and it is multipurpose. All you can think it is useful for yourself and your family, in particular children.

IN GENERAL:

Again, we use to say, "BE A WARRIOR NOT A WORRIER." Keep a positive attitude. Very likely, you will never be involved in this health emergency, but don't rely on this hypothesis. It is a good lesson, though, and it is wise to be prepared, not thinking that because it will never happen to me, it is ok to ignore an emergency, potential or real.

Be wise with the ongoing information, don't isolate yourself, ask for help IN TIME if you need it, and support the others as much as you can in all the ways you can. You can do it taking your protective measures too.
