CLEANING ADVICES

Many are concerned regarding the safety of surfaces and objects, and the possibility of them to transmit the virus.

There are many controversial theories regarding how long the virus can survive out of an organism, on different kind of surfaces. Studies suggest that it can be infectious, as the other types of coronaviruses, between a few hours to several days. It depends on the environmental conditions - temperature, humidity, exposure), or the materials on which it deposits. According to the first Chinese reserchers, at 37°C, the virus can survive up to three days on glass, plastic or metal, paper, and fabrics.

A recent complete study, Aerosol and Surface Stability of SARS-CoV-2 as Compared with SARS-CoV-1,1 reached the following results:

  1. HCoV-19 can remain viable in aerosols for 3 hours (in a closed environment - NDR);
  2. HCoV-19 was most stable on plastic, and stainless steel and the viable virus could be detected up to 3 days post-application, though by then the virus titer was significantly reduced;
  3. No viable virus could be measured after 4 hours on copper;
  4. HCoV-19 can resist 24 hours on cardboard.

Recent articles report that it is NOT possible to be infected by the virus through food (cooked and/or cleaned appropriately). The risk of transmission through contaminated commercial goods or parcels is low. Because of the various conditions to which the materials have been exposed to during the travel and the movement.

WHAT TO DO

  • It is possible to inactivate the virus in one minute with alcohol (ethanol between 62 and 71%), hydrogen peroxide, or sodium hypochlorite. You can clean surfaces and objects with these chemicals or solution of those (be careful in mixing different chemicals! It can be dangerous).
  • You can treat spaces and objects with an ozone generator (see our post). Objects can also be treated with a UV lamp. Always stay away from these devices when in funtion and follow the istructions of the producer.
  • When you carry in your groceries (or mail or packages), define a specific place where to clean them and treat them before you admit the products inside the house and in the kitchen.
  • If you cannot proceed for sanitation of surfaces or objects, respect, store them in a safe, separate space, and leave them there for at least 4 or 5 days.
  • Wash your hands clean with water and soap (the now-famous procedure of the 20''hands washing!)
  • Don't touch your face if you have to manipulate objects until you can wash your hands.
  • Establish procedures and protocols for spaces, surfaces, objects cleaning in your house/office.
  • Always keep your CHILDREN SAFE and away from chemicals and possible infectious material.
